Search instructions

Our search engine has two user interfaces:

basic search interface
advanced search interface.

Search results are NOT case sensitive. All letters, regardless of how you type them, will be understood as lower case. For example, searches for "Slovenia", "slovenia", "SLOVENIA" or "sLoVeNiA" will all return the same results.

Basic search

Basic search user interface allows entry of keywords and selection of a search method (either exact match or word variations).

To enter a query into the search engine, just type in a few descriptive words, select the search type and hit the Enter key (or click on the Search button) for a list of relevant web pages.

Exact match

If you know exactly how words are written on a web page it is advisable to use the exact match search. If you are looking for, e.g. Ministry for Public Administration, enter the following keywords:

Ministry for Public Administration

If you want to find an exact phrase, use quotation marks, e.g.:

"Ministry for Public Administration"

Word variations (stemming)

If you do not know exactly how a word is written on a web page it is better to use the word variations search. In this case the search engine will use a stem of each keyword, so if the search query is Ministries the program will search the word Ministry, too.

The search engine uses the Ispell database for stemming. The database currently contains about 270,000 word forms and it can use only stems from the database. All word forms are not in the database so if a word is unknown to the search engine, it is advisable that the search be repeated using another word form.

Advanced search

In addition to the basic search options, the advanced search enables you to use the following additional search criteria:

limiting the search scope according to the document properties:

whole document
contents of the document
description ("Meta Description" field)
keywords ("Meta Keywords" field)
title

selection of the search scope:

searching the web pages of selected state institution

selection word match in the search query:

AND
OR
logical expression

Selection of operators between words in the search query string enables composition of various search criteria. If logical AND operator is used, only those documents that contain ALL the query words will be presented. If logical OR is used, documents that contain ANY of the query words will be presented. More complex relations can be created by selecting the Boolean expression - in this case appropriate operators (listed below) can be placed between words:

~ NOT, e.g.: municipality & ~decision - will find those documents containing the word "municipality" that do not contain the word "decision"

( ) grouping the expressions, e.g.: (municipality & ljubljana) & ~decision - will find those documents containing the words "municipality" and "ljubljana" that do not contain the word "decision"
